Hello, Again

So… it’s been a while, huh.

The only excuse I really have is being too exhausted to even bother taking the time to write after work. However, considering that I spend most of my free time (on weeknights, at least) snuggled up under my kotatsu re-watching episodes of Parks and Recreation for umpteenth time, I can’t help but think that reasoning is a little… flimsy.

Maybe I’m being too hard on myself, but as an aspiring writer/creative of sorts, I feel like I should be trying use what free time I have to write something, anything. I mean, how do I expect to achieve anything if I don’t put in the effort?

Admittedly, though, it’s hard to resist the temptation to switch off once I leave work. The kind of work I do as CIR is the kind of work I hope to do once I finish my time on the JET Programme, and thus a part of me doesn’t feel the necessity to work on my own portfolio. Well, not an urgent necessity, at least. My work likely does count as a portfolio of some description, after all.

I suppose it’s a reality of working full-time… well, as a CIR at least. I am lucky in that I am generally not required to work overtime (and if I do, I can take that time off at a later date), and generally have the free time to do things after work. However, what they don’t tell you is that sitting in front of a computer screen at your desk all day can be really tiring.

Maybe the lack of CIR-penned blogs actually speaks to that.

At any rate, I’m going to try and hold myself more accountable, and try to write at least one blog post a week. Something, anything. As long as something is getting written. In a perfect world the mood would strike more often and more naturally, but sometimes you’ve just got to push through and make a habit out of it first.

Fingers crossed I actually do it.

But that’s probably not the best way to end this post, so…

I’ll be back. I promise.

Oh, Omotesando

Omotesando has to be one of my favourite areas in Tokyo. There’s just something about the tree-lined streets, the high end stores, the architecture, the trendy cafes that gives the area a certain stylish atmosphere that I simply adore. Often I find myself fantasising about opening a small boutique or cafe, probably somewhere tucked away in the backstreets, and walking to work on mornings much like this one, or simply just running errands and soaking up the atmosphere on my days off. Oh, what a wonderful life that would be.

Waking up in Shinjuku

Earlier this week I ventured out to Tokyo for a work conference. Wanting to spend the morning wandering around Tokyo taking pictures, I opted to take the night bus from Fukui the night before, a decision I admittedly regret now that I am fighting off a cold. But it was during those early hours that I got to snap a few shots of Shinjuku, just before the daily madness set in, so I can’t say that I completely regret it. For the sake of my apparently fragile body, however, next time I think I’ll just head down a day early instead.

Late Afternoon in Osaka

img_9515

Recently, I bought myself a camera. I’ve always enjoyed photography, and with it currently playing a large part in my work, I figured that now was a better time than ever to take the plunge and invest in a full-frame DSLR. During a recent trip to Osaka, I found myself with a little time to kill, so naturally I took the opportunity to take my new partner-in-crime for a bit of a test drive.

There and back again

I took the train out to Imajo the other day, and decided to film a bit of it so I could give Final Cut Pro a little bit of a spin. Unfortunately I didn’t get as much footage at my destination as I had originally intended, but I figured I would go ahead and make the video anyway because practice makes perfect, right? Also, you don’t see many videos about Fukui in general, so even if it’s basically just the scenery from the train, I thought it would be a nice way to show my current home to the world.

I’m hoping to upload every so often, so feel free to subscribe to my channel if you enjoyed it!
